Bones Borrowed

by Eli Nayoung

Rin returns to her coastal hometown to help her mother. Her younger sister, Nao, already has a room and a job waiting elsewhere.

That night, a tapping sound draws Rin to the kitchen. On the table, a hand made of bone repeats a familiar movement.

Upstairs, Nao’s hand is intact — but boneless. The bones inside her hand are gone.

As the same impossible change begins to reach others, Rin realizes that Nao’s hand was only the beginning. The bones are not simply disappearing. They are moving on their own, repeating gestures their owners made every day. And no one knows where they are going.

She had planned to leave this town. She never imagined her bones would go first.
