On 16 October 2026, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed designating Microsoft's business-software ecosystem with strategic market status. Its investigation covers workplace software, including productivity suites, security products and AI tools.

The regulator raised questions about switching barriers, software bundling and whether customers can readily combine services from different suppliers. It also outlined possible areas for future consideration, including how competing AI products can integrate with established workplace tools.

The proposal is not a finding of wrongdoing or a final decision. Consultation continues until 13 November 2026, and the CMA expects to decide on designation by February 2027. Any subsequent intervention would be assessed separately.

Why it matters

Why it matters: a small business may be well served by a familiar software suite while still needing the freedom to change a particular tool when its needs change.

Useful questions include whether data can be exported in workable formats, how well systems connect, what contract terms govern leaving, and how much time switching would take.
