Stack Overflow released its annual Developer Survey on 6 October 2026, based on more than 30,000 responses from technologists in 169 countries.
About 66% of respondents reported using coding assistants or agents at work. In its separate trust question, 48% said they trust AI output when they can verify it easily, while 6.6% said they trust AI with important work decisions. The organisation also reports that 78.7% value source attribution when judging an AI-generated technical answer.
These are survey responses, not a universal measure of every developer or business. They do, however, make an important distinction: frequent use is not the same as unconditional confidence.
Why it matters
Why it matters: an AI tool can produce a first answer quickly, but professional teams still need to know what evidence supports it and what must be checked before it changes real work.
For small teams, a proportionate approach is to test generated code, link sources for factual summaries, and put a named reviewer in charge of decisions that affect people, money or access.
